I have completed the first felt embroidered brooch of the ’27 Before 27′ blog challenge! Yeay! If you missed this blog post you can find it here.
I know its only early days but I am so excited to see how this pans out. I found I was a lot more adventurous with my design idea as I wasn’t constrained to the design I was working on before here. With the ‘Blue &White’ brooches, I made about eight of them.
I quickly learnt that this is only the way to go if I wanted to get fed up, bored of my design and become a handmade making machine!
This time around it was so refreshing to be able to be inspired the vintage style buttons I had found in my little local fabric shop (I talk more about them here). It was refreshing to start a design with endless possibilities. I found this expanded my creative thought processes and created new ideas for further embroidered felt brooch designs by making me step outside the comfort zone I had created with my previous ‘Got to keep making’ mind set.
So, it all started with a little button…
…and turned into my favourite felt embroidered brooch yet.
I love how the petals are malleable. You can mould them slightly so that they close in and look like real petals which have the strength to hold themselves and stay there because of the dainty chain stitch. The centre of the brooch was the biggest challenge as I had to figure out how to stitch on the button as well as attaching the petals, which is how the small centre petals came about as a joiner. Turns out, I love this bit the most.
I then added the brooch fixture to the back and really love the embroidery left raw to see the pretty little stitches on the back too.
One down, 26 to go!
