As promised Buttoneers, it is a ’27 before 27′ blog challenge double whammy this week and I have, dare I say it, one of my favourite embroidered felt brooches I have made so far to show you!
(If you would like to read about the start of this challenge and why I set about it you can do so here)
I have had a poppy flower in mind for a while now and I like to mix it up a bit with real flower designs and imagined flower designs but was waiting for the perfect opportunity. I imagined it all out, right down to the stitches and the centre piece. Problem was, I didn’t know how to do the stitch or own the centrepiece. Yep…now you can see why I hadn’t made it yet!
So practise made perfect with the stitches and I, by pure miracle, found a perfect centrepiece. It was all systems go go go!
It took a while to find exactly the right shade of red felt (have I mentioned before that I am a total perfectionist) but when I did I was excited to cut out some free hand floaty looking shapes for the Poppy petals.
I finally (after a serious amount of practise – thank you YouTube tutorials) mastered the French knot stitch. I know…I know….it’s meant to be really simple! I think I must have been having a sleepy day as I normally pick things up quite quickly but on this day I seriously lacked coordination!
I was so darn proud of myself and they looked exactly as I had imagined them!
These are the little beauties that I found for the prefect centrepiece! I imagined the same but in a sort of Pave bead idea. I couldn’t resist, knowing that they would be perfect.
All of the tiny little gem stones on the orb of the earring looked just like hundreds of little poppy seeds in the centre of the flower.
So, I stitched up all of the cute little French knot stitches around the base of the centre petals…
..and placed them on to the larger poppy petals to make sure they matched up okay.
Then added the centre piece! I loved it! It was exactly how I imagined it would look!
When stitched together I also loved how the centre petals raised up slightly against each other and added to the frilly-ness of the poppy.
I love this brooch a lot and seriously contemplated keeping it for myself! I think the fear of maybe not being able to complete this blog challenge with enough embroidered felt flower brooches at the end made me add it to the collection. 16 down, 11 to go! How exciting!
Can you see why it’s one of my favourites? Which is your favourite flower brooch so far? I would love to hear all about it!
