“I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want. I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really really really wanna zig-a-zig-ah”
Now I have you singing along into your hairbrush wearing your tie dye tshirt, pedal pushers and jelly shoes to the Spice Girls, I feel you are now in the right frame of mind for embroidered felt brooch No.24 in my ’27 before 27′ blog challenge! If this is your first time to Eliston Button or you are a newbie Buttoneer, catch up and read about the ’27 before 27′ challenge here.
I wanted a bright pop of hot pink colour to contrast a brilliant, bright white to combine together in a fresh, fun and fabulous colour combination.
I started out by cutting out tulip-like petal shapes in the two coloured felt sheets.
I wanted these colours to be the only colours in this brooch so that it really grabbed your attention, so I chose embroidery thread in the same tones.
I decided to keep the stitches simple yet eye-catching. I had in mind a zig-zag chevron that ran alongside the zig-zags of the petal shapes so used a back stitch to edge the felt in white. I followed this with a hot pink line and then closed around it in white back stitch again to form three lines. I love this effect! It is really effective and I like the way the two white lines almost frame the pink yet don’t allow their colour to wash into the felt, but add texture.
Along the same lines of keeping the hot pink and white theme I found this beautiful multi-faceted hot pink button that just oozes colour, texture and light-catching qualities. It is one of my favourites.
I just know that as a kid I would have clutched this button in my chubby little hand and held it tight like it was treasure!
I love how the central button brings all of the lovely pink parts of the brooch together neatly into the centre for that final surge of colour.
I am also a little obsessed with how the three tracks of stitches give the felt petals a bit of strength to hold their own and give a real depth to the flower brooch.
I know I probably say this every time, but I think I am going to really struggle to part with some of these brooches come Etsy Shop opening in June! I now have an official shop opening date now too! It’s so exciting! I will share with you all in my final ’27 before 27′ blog post on the 11th June (Which is *cough cough* MY BIRTHDAY!! *nudge wink*) So stay tuned!
I can’t believe how far I have come towards the end of this challenge. Only three more embroidered brooches to go! I am still super excited to complete this challenge and see what’s in store but am also excited to plan new projects, create new things and see where Eliston Button will take me next.
Which is your favourite brooch so far? Is there a particular stitch you love? I would love to hear all about it!
Meet me for a chat with a cup of tea in the comments below. I’ll click the kettle on!
I will be back with the next brooch on Tuesday next week because we have a bank holiday here in the UK on Monday, which for me will be filled with boxing up more of my house and the studio ready for the big move!
