Good Morning Buttoneers! We are on number 9 of the ’27 before 27′ blog challenge that I set myself in January (you can read about it all here) and I had a real love/hate relationship with this one. I found the pale pink and pale peach felt in my local fabric shop a while back and thought to myself how it reminded me of my old ballet shoes from when I was little.
The pretty pastels worked well together in my mind and I visualised little tutu’s and the perfect little plié.
This all went well in my imagination but in practise I struggled to decide how I would put this image into action. I sketched out the design on to paper, for the first time ever! and then knew the simple shapes I had to cut out of the felt sheets. I found by simplifying and breaking it down into smaller steps rather than struggling with the final design in my head, I was able to see it clearer.
I have to make a confession, to be honest with you. I hated it. I don’t know what it was but I just couldn’t warm to the shapes or the colours together. It drove me crazy and I walked away from it and left it sat there on my sewing station for the whole weekend. I never do this! The panic of not finishing a brooch before the time normally kicks me in the pyjama bottoms to get going. But, in hindsight, I think that’s just what I needed. To walk away, clear my mind, do other things and look back at it after a couple of days (with a bit of that panic setting in) and take a different approach.
I picked up the pretty pastel pink embroidery thread and I stitched a simple back stitch around the pale peach felt shape to attach them together. I kept it simple (baby steps, remember!) I liked this! Hooray! Except that I thought it looked too unfinished and added the blanket stitch around the outside. This…THIS…is where it all fell in to place and I had my Aha! moment. It actually looked like a ballet slipper and I loved that the little petals would symbolise my initial idea.
So, now was the time to find a centre piece. I dug into my glass of goodness (you can see these here) and tried out about five different buttons and earrings etc. Until I found this beauty – that not only was gorgeous (so much so that I almost kept it for myself!) but the centre perfectly matched my peach felt…
I love it a ridiculous amount if I am honest with you but found I was a little hasty in thinking it was perfect…It was totally dwarfed by the larger petals.
I would not let this beat me! I attached it to a circle of pink felt, used the same simple backstitch I had sewn around the peach felt shapes and created a little flower shape around the centrepiece. It was super cute! I didn’t want to leave the circle shape around the outside, so I carefully trimmed around the little stitches to reveal the flower shape in the felt too that skimmed around the edges.
I finally fell in love with this brooch when it had all come together at the end and I was so glad I had gone back to it and persevered.
So there we go! 9 down and 18 to go! I am still excited about this project and seeing how far I can go and what new designs I have stored in my imagination!
What do you think? Does it remind you of ballet slippers like it does with me? I would love to hear all about it!
