Hello there lovely Buttoneers! Following my last Create 30 blog challenge launch of my Christmas Sprout Pom Pom Garlands and individual hanging decorations (that I am still totally obsessed with!) I wanted to continue the festive Christmas theme to carry on the seasonal goodness! If you are a newbie Buttoneer, be sure to catch up with my Create 30 blog challenge here and explore the handmade loveliness so far here.
I sat down with a cup of tea and started sketching out ideas and plans for something festive to make for myself.
I started thinking about what I loved to bring out at Christmas time and those certain decorations I pull out every year that mean so much and have so many fond memories attached to them…
They almost become as much a part of Christmas traditions and memories than the turkey dinner [or insert your fave festive grub here] or singing along to ‘Christmas in New York’ by The Pogues after a little bit too much mulled wine! What is the song that makes you feel like Christmas is here?
I wanted to create something that could be passed down to my future children and their future children, just like some of my favourite traditions have.
This in turn took me down a creative thought process of crafting traditions that have been passed down through generations like knitting or crochet….or weaving…Voila! There is was! I wanted to create myself a festive woven wall hanging! I loved the idea so much once I started sitting down with my wooden lap loom and a bundle of festive yarns (and a giant mug of tea of course!) more than I should have with work to do and another Create 30 looming ahead of me. So why not weave away to my heart’s content and launch it as my next project – win win!
So, without further ado…here is Create 30 – No.10 – A Festive Woven Wall Hanging…
This festive woven wall hanging is sure to add a huge splash of Christmas cheer to your home for the season with its little nod to Father Christmas!
Red acrylic yarn has been lovingly hand woven on a wooden lap loom from the top of the piece that meets with a braided Soumak weave technique. This adds a really gorgeous texture and dimension with all three of the braided woven sections of the wall hanging finishing in a long yarn tassel. These tassels flow down the right hand side of the piece and reach the waterfall of tassels at the bottom, bringing all of the Christmas goodness together.
Further red woven goodness then meets a super fluffy and crisp snowy white yarn that looks just like Santa’s coat fur trim! You eye is then drawn down to a braided section framing a black ‘belt’ section of the wall hanging that holds subtle, light-catching, thin thread that is interwoven with the black yarn to really catch your eye. A further White fluffy yarn section is woven in before a double layer of tasselled goodness secures the bottom of the woven wall hanging, adding a really swishy, tactile feel to the whole piece.
The woven wall hanging is threaded and secured to a pine wooden dowel and a festive red and white, candy cane style bakers twine is threaded through the wood, ready to hang the piece up in your home. The pine dowel has been hand-sanded down at the ends to create a beautifully finished bevelled edge and two red, wooden beads have been threaded onto the hanging twine which adds a super fun splash of colour, bringing the festive colour palette together.
The pine dowel is approx. 28.8cm across and 1.5cm thick. The woven wall hanging is approx. 52cm long from the pine dowel to the bottom of the tassels (not including the hanging twine) and approx. 20cm at its widest point (not including the long, hanging side tassels down the right hand side) The whole piece from the top of a taught handing twine to the bottom tassels is approx. 63.5cm long.
This festive woven wall hanging is sure to bring festive cheer to your home and become a staple Christmas decoration that will make you smile every year you dust off the decorations again and again – Now I have to start again and make myself one!
