Hello there lovely Buttoneers! I am back with my latest Create 30 blog challenge make today! Hooray! I was definitely in ‘I need a holiday’ mode when I was planning out the last handful of Create 30 creations with their beach holiday vibes! Did you catch my Seaside Harbour Fabric Collage and Beach Huts By The Sea Fabric Collage? How about my Mini Beach Woven Wall Hangings? Well…I loved making my mini beach weavings so much that I was eager to stretch my creative imagination and go all in for a large woven wall hanging this time!
I feel like the beach scene worked out so well in my mini weavings with the colours and patterns and all round dose of weavy fibre arty goodness and I wanted to see how it would all work on a much larger scale…
SPOILER ALERT: It did! Hooray!
I was so excited to gather my yarns, wool’s and fabrics to play around with how I would create the beach scene on a not only wider, but much longer canvas.
I played around with depths of coloured sections and textures of rope and handmade fabric yarn until it came together into one of my favourite woven wall hangings yet!
So much so that I sprang to action once I had finished tying up loose ends on this one (quite literally!) to make one for our new living room! Now if that isn’t believing in your own products then I don’t know what is! Haha!
I really loved the trial and error play I got to experience with this one, weaving and un-weaving sections to maybe re-weave in another shape or style. I gave myself time to step back and look at it from a distance for a while, as not to get too caught up in my own head about it – A regular occurrence in this crafty perfectionist’s brain!
I became a bit obsessed with gathering different yarns and textured fabrics together to create the gorgeous and long seaweed -like tendrils that make up the tassels. I love that they created a mermaid feel to the whole lower half – pure magic when it all came together!
Also worth a mention is how those fluffy white and blue clouds made my whole week when I found that absolute treasure of a pom pom yarn in a long forgotten about stash in the Eliston Button Headquarters too!
So, without further ado…Here is Create 30 – No.24 – Large Beach Scene Woven Wall Hanging…
From the crisp white fluffy clouds right down into the depths of the long seaweed tendrils at the bottom, this beautiful beach scene woven wall hanging is sure to add a rich dose of tactile and colourful goodness to your home décor.
Thoughts of strolling along the warm beige sand of the beach, sand dunes behind you, the sea breeze in your hair kissing your skin with its cool touch…the balmy air and the salty sea scent hugs as a feeling of calm washes over you… And all from your very own home – without the fear of seagulls stealing your ice cream or pooping on your head!
Perfect for adding elegant colours and soft dimensional fibre art to your living room or maybe even a slice of the seaside to your bedroom walls? Wherever you hang this woven wall hanging, it is a warm bohemian beauty that it is sure to be a fabulous conversation starter and a gorgeous reminder to take time out, relax and dream of strolling along the beach!
This woven wall hanging starts at the top with a sky blue yarn that is lovingly hand woven on a wooden lap loom before reaching a fluffy and dimensional pom pom yarn, carefully selected to create a cloud like texture to the sky. This playful element trails down the right hand side, merging with other strands of the piece creating a flow of fabrics that draw your eye down the weaving. A cotton t-shirt fabric has been cut into a thick continuous yarn and woven in to a diagonal colour block to add a contrasting texture to the piece before heading into a silkier, softer and variegated coloured sea foam-like section.
Different cottons, fabric and yarns have been hand chosen to create the ombre gradient from light to dark as the ocean gets deeper and deeper down the weaving.
A small pom teal pom pom yarn weaves in and out to add a real tactile texture, breaking up the deeper colours like a cresting wave, before a woven braided Soumak weave rises and falls across the weaving.
The end of the braided weave has been deliberately left untied and trails down the right hand side of the piece, flowing into the seaweed tassels below.
Each tassel at the bottom of the woven wall hanging is a mixture of different teal, green and textured yarns that together create a gorgeous array of seaweed colours that are a really eye-catching and prominent part of the overall piece.
This beach scene woven wall hanging is approx. 57cm from the top of the hanging string to the end of the lowest tassels below.
The weaving is hung by its blue and white striped bakers twine warp thread loops onto a wooden dowel, which is approx. 30cm wide. The wooden dowel has been sanded to a bevelled edge for a sleek rounded finish and drilled at each end to hold a threaded length of twine that acts as a hanging yarn.
The hanging yarn matches the weavings warp thread in its sturdy baker’s twine which beautifully compliments the colours of the wall hanging, alongside two large and round wooden teal beads that have been threaded onto each side for decoration.
The widest part of weaving is approx. 27cm wide and from the top of weaving (under wooden dowel) to the bottom of the tassels it is approx. 45cm long.
As always, this weaving is ready to ship but if you would prefer a different colour palette or design, please do not hesitate to contact me for a chat about your ideas for a more custom order – How exciting!
