Hello there lovely Buttoneers! I made it to 30!!!! Can you believe it!? I am totally in a spin about the fact that I have completed my Create 30 blog challenge – I am pretty sure it is going to take a while for it to sink in and I’m not even sure I will feel the relief of pressure until I have written the next blog post about it all. I plan on making a bit of a fun round up and lessons learned type post and then I can breathe!
I naturally wanted to go out with a bit of a bang at the end of the challenge and do one of the things I love the most, but progress it in some way, push the boundaries a bit more and push my creativity and abilities further than I have before – That was the whole reason behind my Create 30 blog challenge right!?
I love designing an making prints and illustrations, I love, love, love making embroidered felt jewellery and accessories, and don’t get me wrong, I blooming love making fluffy little garlands of pom pom goodness! But, I adore weaving. I feel like weaving is my therapy, my me projects, my passion projects I guess you could say. They are little labours of love that take more than just a day or so to make. They take time and trials and playing with ideas. Weaving pushes me to think harder about shapes and colours and textures – Oh the textures! Weaving is a dream to play with and I certainly want to adventure into the magic a lot more now I won’t have the constraints of time and blog challenges and blog posts etc etc.
So it was a total no-brainer when it came to deciding what to make, it was more tricky to know how to push outside of the safety net of what I have made before.
I wanted to go bigger and more colourful. I wanted to weave shapes and play with tactile textures. I wanted long flowing tassels that didn’t tangle and to play with small sections and pockets of textured magic, rather than just weaving straight across the piece.
I wanted to freestyle and flow but create a rhythm and a piece that came together at the end. I wanted to compliment and contrast and be adventurous! It was a lot of fun!
So…without further ado, here is Create 30 – No.29 & 30 – Large Colourful Woven Wall Hangings…
First up is my hot pink, turquoise and rainbow large colourful woven wall hanging…
From the shades of pink and purple variegated woven yarn right down into the depths of the long hot pink tassels at the bottom, this beautiful and brightly coloured woven wall hanging is sure to add a rich dose of tactile, colourful goodness to your home decor.
This one of a kind weaving is super happy and makes for a gorgeously vibrant statement piece for your walls.
Its fun spirited, vivacious colours and small pockets of magical detail is sure to catch your eye and add a huge splash of colour to wherever you choose hang it.
Maybe you would adorn your living room walls with soft, happy treasure to pull a multitude of colours together to form a beautifully designed room? Maybe you would hang it above your bed to draw in the happy bohemian vibes? The possibilities of home decor magic are endless!
Starting at the very top pink and purple brushed, variegated yarn is lovingly hand woven in colour blocks to set the weaving off on its colourful adventure. A hot pink braided Soumak weave shoots across in a chunky tactile section of colour which beautifully compliments the similar braided section below.
The tail of the braid has deliberately been left long to flow down the right hand side of the piece to join with the bottom section and merge with the beautiful tassels.
Further variegated pink and purple yarns create colour blocks to match the top section before an explosion of colour splashes across the centre of the weaving. Bright turquoise short tassels in three little layers that have been hand cut to different length levels, to form a block of colour and to add dimension to the left hand side of the weaving. To the right hand side of this a rich raspberry pink pom pom yarn has been woven into a chunky colour block adding further dimension and textured goodness.
Sat below is a turquoise colour block that beautifully compliments the green braided Soumak weave before joining with a fluffy and richly coloured rainbow pom pom yarn. This multi-coloured yarn contains all of the colours of the weaving together in the mid-section and adds adorable mini pom pom tufts of pure colour magic!
Just as before and bringing the piece together, pink and purple colour blocks reflect the top of the piece before meeting the large braided Soumak woven section.
This adds a real eye-catching block of colourful dimension before flowing down to the long tassels below.
This brightly coloured woven wall hanging is approx. 74 cm from the top of the hanging string to the end of the lowest tassels below. You can find all of the measurement details on the Etsy listing 🙂
Next up is my teal, cream, grey and navy colour palette…
From the glittering navy blue woven yarn right down into the depths of the long deep teal tassels at the bottom, this beautifully coloured woven wall hanging is sure to add a rich dose sumptuous textured goodness to your home decor.
This one of a kind weaving is really elegant and makes for a gorgeously tactile statement piece for your walls. Its deep, warm colours and eye-catching treasures of detail are sure to catch your eye wherever you choose hang it. Maybe you would add it to the walls of your sophisticated yet bohemian themed lounge or above the dining table to compliment your elegantly styled colour scheme? Maybe you would hang it near hanging planters and macramé succulent holders to draw the beautiful colours and textures together?
Starting at the very top, navy blue yarn with a delicate thread of blue glitter running through its fibres is lovingly hand woven in a thin stripe of colour to set the weaving off on its colourful adventure. This is then followed by a two horizontal stripes of dark grey yarn that hug between them a stripe of lighter grey yarn. These stripes meet a block of cream coloured t-shirt yarn, that gives a softer more rounded appearance than the softer wool-like yarns, where the change in texture makes for a beautiful contrast. This section reaches down to a teal coloured triangle making the cream yarn chevron around it into a gorgeous shaped pattern.
A thick, chunky teal braided Soumak weave stretches across beneath, adding further dimension and texture to the piece. The tail of the braid has been trimmed short to create little tassels that meet on the right hand side of the weaving with another braided section below.
Between these two rich coloured braids sits a beautiful mixture of blue pom pom yarn rows with fluffy balls of texture, further glittery navy blue yarn and two dark grey stripes. These not only compliment the top of the piece, but house a soft grey braided weave between them.
The lower teal braided sections tails are again, cut sort to create little tassels that meet with a lower section of the woven wall hanging on the right hand side, bringing the whole piece together.
Under this a teal triangle has been lovingly hand woven above two dark grey stripes that hug a softer grey stripe to match the top chevron detail, bringing the pattern and design down through the colours to meet a beautifully warm cream triangle of t-shirt yarn. This then meets with a super fun blue pom pom yarn block of fluffy goodness.
A large braided Soumak woven section completes the woven piece and adds a real eye-catching block of colourful dimension before flowing down to the long deep teal tassels below. This woven wall hanging is approx. 63 cm from the top of the hanging string to the end of the lowest tassels.
Both weavings are hung by their matching bakers twine warp thread loops onto a wooden dowel, which is approx. 30.5 cm wide. The wooden dowel has been sanded to a bevelled edge for a sleek rounded finish and drilled at each end to hold a threaded length of twine that acts as a hanging yarn. The hanging yarn matches the weavings warp thread in its sturdy baker’s twine which beautifully compliments the colours of the wall hanging.
The pink weaving has two rounded pink wooden beads each side of the hanging twine and the teal weaving has two handmade grey felted beads either side of the hanging twine for decoration.
Wowee! I still can’t believe I did it! Which is your favourite woven wall hanging? Where would you hang them in your home? I would love to hear all about it!
