Photo-a-Day October 2014 – Eliston Button A to Z of Craft

Photo-a-Day October 2014 at www.elistonbutton.com - Eliston Button - That Crafty Kid

October’s Photo-a-Day challenge was the alphabet and some numbers at the end. I was at first daunted by this, it seemed a little bit too open ended and I quite like the boundaries of the usual months.

Day 00 - Photo-a-Day October Prompts - Photo-a-Day October 2014 - Eliston Button A to Z of Craft at www.elistonbutton.com - Eliston Button - That Crafty Kid – Art, Design, Craft & Adventure.

So, this got me thinking and I decided I needed to create a theme for my photos for the month and what better theme than crafts! So I started my Eliston Button A to Z of Crafts #elistonbuttonatozofcrafts and you know what!? I loved it!!

I started off, being the perfectionist that I am, by writing an a-z list and filling in the easy ones…like ‘B is for Buttons’…obviously! It got really tricky on the awkward letters like ‘U’ and ‘Q’ and ‘O’ but I knew that I had the trickiest of all ‘X’ nailed with a photo of my Xyron Sticker Maker! hehe! A couple of them I pulled out of the bag last minute, on the day it was due like ‘O is for Origami’, and sighed with relief when it was taken, but on the whole I had it figured out and even learnt some new crafts!

Having it figured out for the whole month was bliss for me! I had no panic, no worrying about what to take and then just ‘making do’ with it for the sake of having a fulfilled photo prompt. I was able to take all of that out of the equation and concentrate solely on the ‘setting up’ of the photograph.

I could concentrate on colour, on positioning, framing, juxtaposition of contrasting items and playing around with the fun of the photography…and I guess that’s the point right!?

Even though like with past Photo-a-Day Round-Ups, This month didn’t document my month with the ‘Whom? What? Where? Why?’ I found that I made up for this with quick snaps of these things as well because I had gotten into the habit of documenting the everyday.

Here is my October 2014 – Eliston Button A to Z of Craft in a Photo-a-Day…

Day 1 – A is for…Acrylic Paint

Day 2 – B is for…Buttons! And Bows! These are some of my favourite buttons (hence they are together and not organised by colour!)

Day 3 – C is for…Crop-a-Dile. The fabulous craft tool by We R Memory Keepers that I use for hole punching and eyelet pressing.

Day 4 – D is for…Dymo – I love my Dymo label makers as they help me organise my craft supplies!

Day 5 – E is for…Embroidery Thread. One of my favourite Supplies.

Day 6 – F is for…Felting. I love to needle felt and wet felt and need to make more time to play with the gorgeous wool tops in their beautiful colours.

Day 7 – G is for… Glitter! I love love love glitter but I will be picking it off my face all day now like it comes out of my pores! Glitter seemed like a good idea at the time!

Day 8 – H is for…Handmade. These are some of my Handmade felt flower brooches that are in my Etsy shop.

Day 9 – I is for…Ink. Calligraphy and hand-drawn script is a lot harder than it looks with ink and a dip pen!

Day 10 – J is for…Jars of Beads and Buttons.

Day 11 – K is for…Knitting. Every winter for the last two years I have brought out this scarf I have been knitting! This is the third year and I am determined to finish it!

Day 12 – L is for…Loom. I have just started weaving on my wooden peg loom and I love it 🙂

Day 13 – M is for…Machine. I love using my sewing machine for a crafty project.

Day 14 –N is for…Needles. Knitting needles and sewing needles of all shapes and sizes 🙂

Day 15 – O is for…Origami. I am hopeless at Origami but I always enjoy a challenge! (It is ridiculous how long it took me to make these!)

Day 16 – P is for…Pens, Pencils and Pompoms!

Day 17 – Q is for…Quilling. This is a horrible first attempt at quilling! Safe to say I am definitely not a natural…Glue everywhere!

Day 18 – R is for…Ribbons. I have so many pretty ribbons that are almost too pretty to use!

Day 19 – S is for…Sewing and Sequins!

Day 20 – T is for…Tape Measures. The panda one is my favourite.

Day 21 – U is for…Unmounted Stamps. This was a tricky one!

Day 22 – V is for…Veneers. I love these Studio Calico ‘Sundrifter’ wood veneer embellishments and adore the little wooden flowers I found in a craft shop.

Day 23 – W is for…Washi Tape. I guess it’s pretty obvious how obsessed I am with Washi Tape now! I also love love love my We R Memory Keepers Washi Tape dispense that my fab fiancé bought me for my birthday J The boy did good!

Day 24 – X is for…Xyron Sticker Maker. I love my sticker maker and use it a lot for making anything from paper to ribbons to pieces of fabric into a sticker!

Day 25 – Y is for…Yarn. I love collecting it up and knitting and weaving away.

Day 26 – Z is for…Zips. I have a large collection of Zips and I don’t know how it happened!

Day 27 – One – One giant pencil.

Day 28 – Two – Two Pairs of fancy edged craft scissors. My favourite is the wavy one 🙂

Day 29 – Three – Three large shiny pink buttons.

Day 30 – Four – Four blue paintbrushes, These are my favourite paintbrushes.

Day 31 – Five – Five handmade felt flower brooches. These and more are in my Etsy shop.

I am so thrilled with my round-up of photos for this month and equally as thrilled that I jumped right into to trying something different. I tried and learnt new crafts like calligraphy, loom weaving, origami and quilling. It’s safe to say that I an sooooo not a natural quiller or origamist (are they even words?) but that I had forgotten all about my wooden peg loom and now have the weaving bug!

I love that each photograph depicts its item in a fun and creative way and that even my least favourites, like the ‘U is for Unmounted Stamps’ – which I totally pulled out of the bag last minute, blend well with the rest of the photos. I think that my all-time favourite photos this month are ‘G is for Glitter’ – even though I was in such a glittery mess afterwards! I love ‘L is for Loom’ as it reminds me of that ‘ah ha!’ moment when I realised how relaxing it was, I will always remember meticulously setting up ‘P is for Pens, Pencils and Pompoms and masking taping down the ‘R is for Ribbons’ and ‘Z is for Zips’  – because as you know, it had to be just right!

I love them all and am so proud of this month’s collection. I may even print a few off to hang up around the studio!

November Photo-a-Day is back to the normal list of photo prompts and a lot of them look really hard but I am excited to embrace it and learn as I go along. Hopefully I can take my new found skills and deepened love for this fun photography to battle through the hard prompts and take on the challenge!
