October’s Photo-a-Day challenge was the alphabet and some numbers at the end. I was at first daunted by this, it seemed a little bit too open ended and I quite like the boundaries of the usual months.
So, this got me thinking and I decided I needed to create a theme for my photos for the month and what better theme than crafts! So I started my Eliston Button A to Z of Crafts #elistonbuttonatozofcrafts and you know what!? I loved it!!
I started off, being the perfectionist that I am, by writing an a-z list and filling in the easy ones…like ‘B is for Buttons’…obviously! It got really tricky on the awkward letters like ‘U’ and ‘Q’ and ‘O’ but I knew that I had the trickiest of all ‘X’ nailed with a photo of my Xyron Sticker Maker! hehe! A couple of them I pulled out of the bag last minute, on the day it was due like ‘O is for Origami’, and sighed with relief when it was taken, but on the whole I had it figured out and even learnt some new crafts!
Having it figured out for the whole month was bliss for me! I had no panic, no worrying about what to take and then just ‘making do’ with it for the sake of having a fulfilled photo prompt. I was able to take all of that out of the equation and concentrate solely on the ‘setting up’ of the photograph.
I could concentrate on colour, on positioning, framing, juxtaposition of contrasting items and playing around with the fun of the photography…and I guess that’s the point right!?
Even though like with past Photo-a-Day Round-Ups, This month didn’t document my month with the ‘Whom? What? Where? Why?’ I found that I made up for this with quick snaps of these things as well because I had gotten into the habit of documenting the everyday.
Here is my October 2014 – Eliston Button A to Z of Craft in a Photo-a-Day…

Day 29 – Three – Three large shiny pink buttons.
Day 30 – Four – Four blue paintbrushes, These are my favourite paintbrushes.
Day 31 – Five – Five handmade felt flower brooches. These and more are in my Etsy shop.
I am so thrilled with my round-up of photos for this month and equally as thrilled that I jumped right into to trying something different. I tried and learnt new crafts like calligraphy, loom weaving, origami and quilling. It’s safe to say that I an sooooo not a natural quiller or origamist (are they even words?) but that I had forgotten all about my wooden peg loom and now have the weaving bug!
I love that each photograph depicts its item in a fun and creative way and that even my least favourites, like the ‘U is for Unmounted Stamps’ – which I totally pulled out of the bag last minute, blend well with the rest of the photos. I think that my all-time favourite photos this month are ‘G is for Glitter’ – even though I was in such a glittery mess afterwards! I love ‘L is for Loom’ as it reminds me of that ‘ah ha!’ moment when I realised how relaxing it was, I will always remember meticulously setting up ‘P is for Pens, Pencils and Pompoms and masking taping down the ‘R is for Ribbons’ and ‘Z is for Zips’ – because as you know, it had to be just right!
I love them all and am so proud of this month’s collection. I may even print a few off to hang up around the studio!
November Photo-a-Day is back to the normal list of photo prompts and a lot of them look really hard but I am excited to embrace it and learn as I go along. Hopefully I can take my new found skills and deepened love for this fun photography to battle through the hard prompts and take on the challenge!
