Around Here…I’m Back!

Around Here...at www.elistonbutton.com - Eliston Button - That Crafty Kid

Hello there lovely Buttoneers! I’m blooming back! Have you missed me!?

It feels like soooo long ago that I was sat here, mug of coffee in hand, channelling my inner Carrie Bradshaw, tippy tapping away on my laptop…

Actually that all sounds way calmer than it actually was at the end of my Create 30 blog challengeIt’s been so good to step away from the editorial blog calendar for a while. I envisioned myself sat in the garden, reading my book with a cup of tea relaxing my days away. In reality it was so different!

I started off my break by completely stepping away from posting on social media. I needed to get away from the pressures of daily posting ‘perfect’ photos and battling algorithms to get them seen and just live my life a bit. Our family had a sad loss at the start of my break too so posting my day to day or Etsy Shop snippets just didn’t feel right. The break was exactly what I needed and I actually found that I wanted to get back to Instagram sooner than I had scheduled, full of fresh ideas and creativity that I had feared I had lost in the hustle and bustle. More on that later.

So…What have I been up to? Well, a lot of my days have still been on the computer. I spent sooooo long completely re-formatting my back catalogue of blog posts. When I switched over to self-hosting my blog and ended up completely redesigning it, a lot of the text formatting and image sizes changed. I had even lost a huge amount of images on the crossover without realising, resulting in gaps between text and other images – Yikes! As a bit of an organisation obsessive enthusiast (now there’s an enthusiast print in the making!) This drove me insane!

With trying to keep my head above water keeping up with Create 30 and running on that never ending hamster wheel of social media – I had zero time to fix it.

So, with it niggling in the back of my creative little head, I knew that the minute I stopped blogging for a while, I had to get it done. Cue hours of soul destroying reformatting and image sizing…I was purely running on giant cups of coffee and listening to podcasts. At the same time I started re-taking the Eliston Button Etsy Shop product photography to jazz it all up a bit.  I have spruced up my prices, postage prices and search engine optimisation (Yawwwwnnnn!!) but everything is a lot happier and everything is how it is supposed to be. Phew! The prices and postage are all now in place if you have had your eye on something, but I am still trawling through the re-photographing stage! No wonder I am glad to be back.

With all the admin out of the way, here is the pretty picture bit. They are a mixture of Instagram photos with their captions to fill you in on what I have been up to and a few behind-the-scenes photos too. Here is what I have been up to Around Here…Enjoy!

Around Here… Back at the start of July I wrote – “Hello lovelies 💖 I’ve been a little M.I.A over on social media for a while, my usual posting schedule has become a bit few and far between and I feel like I’m stuck in a bit of a creative rut. I feel like a lot of my time is spent working hard against the new algorithms, alongside battling the tide and noise of it all that I have lost my umph and feel really disenchanted by it all 😫 I have decided to, not just take a blogging break, but take a social media break too for a short while, in the hope I can get back my usual creative magic 👩🏻‍🎨 I spend so much time worrying and running on the hamster wheel of daily posts and hashtags and writing engaging posts that the fun, imagination and creativity has gone. I want to put down my phone and my laptop for a while and make something with my hands, something tangible, make my crafty little heart happy again. 😊I am unplugging away from the noise and concentrating on finding the parts that I love; the making, the experimenting, the creativity. 🎨✨ The Eliston Button Etsy Shop (link in profile) will remain open and I will flit in and out of here from time to time and add some Insta stories here and there when I have something to share. I feel like a break will do my creative little soul some good and allow it to feel refreshed and recharged to get back to it soon! 🌼 I urge you all to take a little time away from your screens today. Go for a walk, grab a coffee, sit in the garden, draw something, buy some flowers, have a real life conversation with someone and above all, find the fun again… 🌈💖

Around Here… I am just dipping in to say hello and make sure you know I’m still here. I have however, decided to extend my social media break for a little while longer. Self-care as looking after my mental health is very much a priority for me this year after a stormy couple of years and stepping away from my screen and unplugging the last few weeks have helped tremendously in getting myself back on track. I want to come back at it being able to fully dive in and be my best and most creative self. 👩🏻‍🎨🎨 We also had a very sad loss in our family last week so posting just doesn’t feel right at the moment. I promise I will be back when the time is right, but for now I will dip in and out to say hello and continue to post out your Eliston Button Etsy Shop doses of handmade goodness

Around Here… I dug some home decor bits for the mantelpiece out of boxes from the move to make the place feel homier. We are trying to do up and decorate each room one by one, so a lot of our stuff is still boxed. Sometimes just digging out a few things and arranging them on the mantelpiece can brighten the place up and make it feel like a home rather than box city and a decorating disaster zone!

Around Here… Sex and the City was watched A LOT! I don’t care what people say about this show. To me it will always that old friend that you can just slip back in touch with to make the grey days a little brighter and make your heart feel a little warmer. A familiar favourite that wraps you up in a ball and sits with you under the duvet with a large mug of tea and a ball of knitting until you feel more ‘you’ again – You know the sort.

Hello there lovely Buttoneers! The sun is shining, the balmy warm air is close to your face and the oscillating fan is on full blast. Ice lollies are in the freezer (or dripping down your hand!) the ice cube tray is full and the sun loungers are out. The garden is blooming, the sandals have been dug out of hibernation and the sun lotion is on hand. This can only mean one thing…Its summer time!! Hooray!

In my new tradition of celebrating each of the seasons in my ‘For the Love of…’ blog series, I was excited to get started with the bright blue skies and happy yellow, sunshine filled days of summer…For the Love of…Summer!

Also, I don’t normally get to post a lot about the summer as it is usually when I take a blogging break to revive the creative juices (which I will be doing after my Create 30 blog challenge!) so I thought it would be nice to capture it all before I relax a bit!

Just like with my For the Love of…Autumn, Winter and Spring editions, I will be rounding up all the summer goodness from all things Eliston Button as well as some exciting summer finds from around the web.

I want to get your arty, crafty souls feeling the summer vibes and finding the sunshine tribes…I would definitely join that super fun sounding tribe – Pure sunshine magic!

So, what do I love about summer? I love more sunshine than cloud but also cool breezes and not getting too hot. I love bright happy colours and bright blue skies. I love ice creams and lollies and exciting outdoor adventures (and also getting lost)…

For the Love of…Spring

For the Love of...Spring at www.elistonbutton.com - Eliston Button - That Crafty Kid – Art, Design, Craft & Adventure.

Hello there lovely Buttoneers! Spring has finally sprung and you can feel it in the air! I think I love this season almost as much as I love Autumn and I think it is mostly down to colour. As most of you know, I am a huge colour lover. I love the brights and pastels as much as deep and brooding inky shades – I love them all (especially if they are organised in to rainbow order!)

Colour makes me happy; it can brighten a day or make you feel warm and cosy. Colour can make you feel emotions, grab your attention or simply blend beautifully from tone to tone – What’s not to love right!?

Spring is that wonderful time of year when the sunshine starts to become a bit more of a regular occurrence (sometimes here in the U.K. it’s just a tiny bit more than Winter!) and you can feel the warmth on your face at the same time as the cool breeze across your skin. Just like Autumn, It’s not too hot and not too cold. There is no sweating it out on the way to the shops but you don’t have to bundle up under layers of coats and scarves either. It’s perfect. Not only that, but the flowers start to peek through from their winter slumber.

The excitement of catching sight of bulbs peeking through and gently blossoming into happy sunshine yellows and pinks and lilacs.

Colour starts to explode into everything again and you can stand and take a deep breath of fragrant flowery goodness, warm sun on your face and know that you made it. Spring is the start of less gloomy days and dark evenings, it is the start of new beginnings and spring cleans.

Spring breathes life back into the world and lifts your mood with its cheery smile and its little nod towards summer…Perfection!

So, because of my love of Spring, I wanted to have a little colourful and crafty round up of my favourite springtime finds at the moment, some spring themed Eliston Button Etsy Shop finds and some wonderful springtime goodness from around the web. Much like my ‘For the Love of…Autumn‘ and my ‘For the Love of…Winter‘ blog posts from last year. I really love this little seasonal mini-series and hope to find lots of fun favourites over the course of the years to come too.

I really love finding inspiration across the web at the same time as supporting fellow craft and creative lifestyle bloggers that I look up to and admire…

Here are six spectacular spring time crafts that I have discovered recently – I can’t wait to try them out!

  1. I love the gorgeous Floral Wallflowers Spring Home Decor D.I.Y by the amazing ladies at A Beautiful Mess – It would be sure to brighten up my new living room mantelpiece.
  2. These delicate Paper Hyacinth Flowers are super pretty and so colourful by the fab One Little Project blog – Imagine lots of different colours all together in pretty vases around your home!
  3. I think these really cute Painted Rock Garden Markers from Adventure in a Box are a genius idea! Fun and creative but also super useful for your garden of greenhouse or even if you have an allotment or homestead.
  4. One of my favourites in this mini round-up is this really clever and creative Garden Hose Spring Wreath by the lovely Create Craft Love blog – So much fun and made using things that are probably hanging around the garden or the garden shed at home with a dash of floral fancy to finish it off.
  5. How adorable are these Easter Bunny Treat Jars from the super cute Happiness is Homemade blog!? Perfect for storing seasonal treats or even your spring time craft supplies!
  6. Last but definitely not least, I adore this D.I.Y.Easter Egg Button Art Craft by A Cultivated Nest blog. It’s bright and cheerful and full of buttony goodness – What more could this button obsessed crafty kid want!?

Did you know that I have a few spring time blog posts in the Eliston Button Archives too?

Eliston Button Headquarters – Part Two

Eliston Button Headquarters - Part Two Title Banner - Eliston Button Headquarters – Part Two at www.elistonbutton.com - Eliston Button - That Crafty Kid – Art, Design, Craft & Adventure.

Hello there lovely Buttoneers! I am so excited to share with you Part Two of the Eliston Button Headquarters Tour! Hooray! I am so, so thrilled with the wonderful response from you lovelies about my last studio update post – Eliston Button Headquarters – Part One. I had such lovely comments over on Instagram and am pretty sure I reached a record amount of likes in one day (for my little profile over there!)  I was so grateful and happy that you loved to see this little peek behind-the-scenes.

Sometimes, as a blogger, it is hard to know if posts are liked or what sort of things you all like to see on here unless you tell me because we are not face-to-face – and you shouted loud and clear that you loved seeing behind the scenes where I make the crafty goodness, so thank you!

I always love to hear what you think of my makes or whether you can relate to my little adventures. I love to hear your thoughts or opinions or suggestions so please feel free to chat to me in the comments here or over on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter! I won’t bite, but I do ask that you bring cake! Virtual cake doesn’t have calories right!?

Anyhoo, I am back again to share the other half of the Eliston Button Headquarters. If you read Part One you will see that I covered the right hand side of the studio, which mainly houses shelves (and shelves…and shelves…) of craft supplies that I use (with a dash of creative magic of course!) such as yarn, fabric, inspiring art and craft books, memory keeping, scrapbooks and a hoard *cough cough* collection of buttons and beads and sequins galore…along with a TARDIS or two, a couple of pink Vespa scooters that match the one I actually drive from time to time and a growing collection of ampersands…

Today, as promised, I am sharing the other half of the Eliston Button Headquarters (to the left of the door as you walk in – for your crafty imaginations!) The first thing you see as you walk in is the window, my laptop and the desk areas. Originally I planned to have a sewing area but the desk fitted into the room a lot better together with the others and gave me good distance between my messy paints and scrapbooking away from my laptop and paperwork – trust me that this reason is there through finding out the hard way more than once and a couple of laptops ago….Ooops! R.I.P pretty pink Laptop 🙁

One of my favourite walls in the studio is the one surrounding my desk. I use it as a bit of a mood board come inspiring art come place to hang some of my own favourite makes.

Most of the bits and pieces have sentimental value to me – For example, the little cross stitched sewing machine was hand stitched by my little sister as a birthday gift (she always says she isn’t creative so this was such a beautiful and thoughtful gift) and the Pink “She believed she could, so she did” quote print was a gift from my best friend when I made it a whole year in my little creative business! I even have a little Lego minifigure that looks like my fiancé stood on my windowsill!

Eliston Button Headquarters – Part One

Eliston Button Headquarters - Part One - Eliston Button Headquarters – Part one at www.elistonbutton.com - Eliston Button - That Crafty Kid – Art, Design, Craft & Adventure.

Hello there lovely Buttoneers! How are we coming to the end of January soon!? Jeez! It has been a bit of a whirlwind and we are still waiting on a move date (soooooo frustrating!!) but I wanted to take the time to share the Eliston Button Headquarters with you before we move! I know…I know…I have promised this since we moved in about two and a half years ago but we had some problems with the house and then problems with the neighbours from hell and then we are very almost moved again – Yikes! (If you are new to Eliston Button be sure to click through the link for each story to get all caught up!)

“Why share so close to moving again?” I hear you ask! Well, firstly, In the new house we are buying I have no idea what the Eliston Button Headquarters will look like for a really long time as we are going to look into extending the house to build my studio as an extra room – or maybe even building a self-contained studio at the bottom of the garden – either way these things take time and planning permission and money so I will have a temporary work space until we get it all figured out/built/my stress levels have returned to a normal-ish level. Obviously and for anyone that knows me – this is the most stressful thing about moving for my mostly hyper-organised brain – not to mention that it is all happening half way through my Create 30 blog challenge! Eeekk!!

Secondly, I bloody love this creative little space of mine and it would be (for a serial life documenter) a crime to not document it all!

When I am in the midst of overwhelming panic and anxiety about getting my work done and meeting deadlines, or just having a space to sit and weave or paint or sew, I want to be able to look back and go “aww! Remember when I had a space all organised and not in a thousand boxes? I will get there again soon”

So this is also, in part, for me too – for my memory keeping, for posterity, for my future creative studio planning etc etc…

Thirdly, if it’s not on the blog it doesn’t exist, right!?

So, in a nutshell, I really want to document this creative space as a memory and most importantly as a reminder that I had/have the means to be the most creative person I can be and that I will have that again once we get it all figured out. I also wanted to share my space with you lovelies, as promised, so that you can see where the creative goodness happens! I personally, always love to see makers arty/crafty spaces and find them really inspiring – I even have Pinterest boards dedicated to my Dream Studio, the different phases of the Eliston Button Headquarters (where it is soooo crazy pants to look back at my original work space in our old rented house!) and my fave – Danger: Artist at Work!

Maybe it’s just me but I find seeing designer’s and maker’s and artist’s studios super inspiring and I love seeing the places and spaces where the creative magic happens.

There is so much I wanted to share about my studio but we would be here all day if I photographed it all! It has taken sooo long to be able to photograph it all in the right light at this time of year too (damn you Northern Hemisphere!) I have split the whole carnival of creativity into two parts (part two coming soon!) which coincidentally, also pretty much splits the studio into two halves, right down the middle (for your lovely creative imaginations!)

Here is the Eliston Button Headquarters – Part One…

Eliston Button Headquarters Creative Studio - IKEA Bookcase Fabric, Book and Button Storage, TARDIS and Pink Vespa - Eliston Button Headquarters – Part one at www.elistonbutton.com - Eliston Button - That Crafty Kid – Art, Design, Craft & Adventure.

One of my favourite areas of the Eliston Button Headquarters is my wall of bookcases! I love how they store a huge portion of my craft supplies, on show for me to feel inspired and see exactly what I have to start creating something new if I get frustrated with something I am already working on.

I find that having it all in front of me, lets me visualise projects ahead of time or snatch snippets of inspiration on how to finish a work-in-progress or start a new make.

I love to keep the studio fun. A boring or plain space doesn’t match with my personality so would be totally the wrong fit for my creativity. I need a space to feel like home, to fuel my imagination and go back to being a kid as often as possible! I love the top of the bookcases – it is such a wasted space as I can’t reach up there, so I wanted to make them fun and house more ornamental things that I don’t use on a day-to-day basis. The TARDIS, the pink Vespa scooter and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry potions crate on my desk are my favourite items in this photo! The pink scooter matches my own real life scooter (that’s a whole other story!)

I also think I have a bit of a pretty storage box and tin obsession – I mean you can never have too much storage though can you!?
